William Turnbull was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1922. He trained at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1946, enrolling on the painting course but soon transferring to the sculpture department. Turnbull was a key player in the sculptural regeneration of the mid twentieth-century and exhibited in many influential shows including with Eduardo Paolozzi at the Hanover Gallery, London in 1950 and New Aspects of British Sculpture at the 1952 Venice Biennale. Turnbull innovated with traditional media, often incorporating different materials into a single piece and experimenting with movement.
Numerous retrospectives demonstrate Turnbull’s ongoing significance to sculpture, including at Tate in 1973 and 2006 and at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2005. Turnbull is represented in many prestigious international collections.
