Exploring the Anthony Shaw Collection - Central Saint Martins; Stage 1 BA Ceramic Design.

25th April - 2nd June 2018

The objects in this exhibition are a small selection of the results of a collaboration between Central Saint Martins and CoCA, the Centre of Ceramic Art in York. First year BA Ceramic Design students created works reflecting on Anthony Shaw’s ceramic collection and the environments ceramics inhabit. The collaboration introduced and enabled students to engage with the breadth of ceramic techniques and interrogation about contemporary ceramic practice early on in their education.

Through the project students have considered how it feels to make finished work fro exhibition, what it means to own work, and the impact of display on the interpretation of works. Handling and interactivity became points of interest as students were given access to the handling section to encourage interaction within the exhibition context.

We hope that the relationship built between the college and CoCA will continue in the future which can help to inspire the next generation of ceramic designers, makers and artists.

Central Saint Martins Ceramic department would like to thank Fiona Green, Helen Walsh and Anthony Shaw from the York Art Gallery and all of the first-year students from Central Saint Martins who participated in the project and exhibition. Also, Matt Raw who helped enable them to realise their concepts and ideas, ceramist Anna Barlow, who has been responsible for introducing glaze and its materials and Dr Elizabeth Wright who helped build their contextual and theoretical framework and study.
