In 1950 Clarke attended the same welding course run by the British Oxygen Company as Lynn Chadwick and Reg Butler. The new technique, not widely taught at art schools opened the doors to a new language for all three sculptors who were often referred to as the 'New Iron Age' sculptors.

Religious and spiritual imagery regularly occurs throughout Clarke's oeuvre and Effigy is an important work that shows Clarke mastering the medium of iron but also his unusual, almost graphic approach to welding.
