Taunton Deane Crematorium: Test PanelBy Geoffrey Clarke
- Cast aluminium & coloured glass
- Edition size:
This is an iconic work that epitomises Clarke's innovative approach to stained glass and his revolutionary use of a new sculptural material at the time - cast aluminium using polystyrene.
The windows were originally commissioned by the architects Robert Potter for Taunton Deane, a modernist style crematorium that opened in 1965. The building was listed in 1998 for its architectural importance. The Test Panel is currently shown with a wall mounted light box but could easily be incorporated directly into a building design.
Clarke is widely regarded as a pioneer of the golden age of British sculpture and his fearless experimentation with new materials and processes saw him create works which epitomised the vibrancy of the post-war British art scene.
