Ralph Brown RA
And the Figure in the Fifties and Sixties 14 Sep - 22 Oct 2016Deeply influenced by his time studying in Paris in the early 1950's Ralph Brown & The Figure in the Fifties and Sixties casts a new light on Brown's powerful approach to the figure, re-examining it within the context of Modern British and European figurative sculpture including works by Marino Marini, Germaine Richier and Henry Moore.Read more
Working in the studio of Ossip Zadkine, Brown became fully immersed in Paris' thriving sculpture scene, meeting many artists including Alberto Giacometti who was installing his first show at Galerie Maeght. The seminal moment during this period was seeing Germaine Richier’s L’Orage (Storm Man), 1947-8 which Brown documents in his notebooks from the time and in later written recollections saying: “At Musee D’Art Modernes I saw Richier’s ‘L’Orage’ which quite bowled me over, astounded me”. Later Brown met Richier in person and wished that he had worked for her rather than for Zadkine. Ralph Brown’s experience in Paris was profoundly important, influencing his entire career and his approach to the figure. -

Lynn Chadwick
The Couple 1954 - 1990 12 Jan - 26 Feb 2011Lynn Chadwick is one of the most eminent British sculptors of the 20th century, and an important addition to any modern art collection. Chadwick first came to prominence in 1952 when he was included in the British Council’s New Aspects of British Sculpture exhibition for the XXVI Venice Biennale alongside Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler, Henry Moore and Eduardo Paolozzi. The following year he was one of twelve semi-finalists for the Unknown Political Prisoner International Sculpture Competition and at the 1956 Venice Biennale he won the International Sculpture Prize, beating Giacometti.Read more
Pangolin London has a particularly unique relationship with Lynn Chadwick which dates back to 1983 when owners Rungwe Kingdon and Claude Koenig were appointed his founders and assistants. They went on to set up their own foundry, Pangolin Editions, which is now the largest in Europe and which Pangolin London are directly affiliated to. Pangolin London feel extremely privileged to have such direct insight into the mind of the artist, and the intricate process of casting Lynn Chadwick’s sculptures into bronze.
Unlike Hepworth and Moore with their dedication to ‘truth to materials’, Chadwick reversed the process and used construction. He was one of the first sculptors to explore welding, making up linear armature or a skeleton onto which he applied a skin, building up the surface to a solid form. What stands Chadwick’s sculpture apart from the rest is their sculptural ‘attitude’ which he skilfully used to express a particular stance and the relationship of one mass to another whilst also concentrating on precision of line, crispness of texture and subtlety of colour. -
Lynn Chadwick
Out of the Shadows 16 Sep - 8 Nov 2009The constructivist and abstract works Lynn Chadwick produced between 1963 and 1966 have largely escaped critical notice or exposition but are an essential element in any analysis of Chadwick’s unique approach to making sculpture. These sculptures demonstrate that far from sticking to one form of expression during the cultural upheaval of pop, op, and minimalist art, Chadwick was as in touch with the zeitgeist as many of his younger contemporaries. Out of the Shadows: Unseen Sculptures of the 1960s is the most complete survey of Chadwick’s abstract works ever realised and finally recognised how inventive and experimental Chadwick really was. Shared between our two venues Pangolin London and Gallery Pangolin, we offered an insight into these pivotal pieces through drawings, prints and sculptures. The fully illustrated catalogue which accompanies the exhibition gives these abstract works the prominence they deserve within his output as a whole.Read more -
