Coventry’s Joyrider I is part of a small series which depicts figures riding triumphant and free atop of horses or bulls in various poses and positions. The series depicts ultimate harmony between man and beast living and working together something Coventry, a former farmer, was akin to. The very nature of the figure’s pose is instantly uplifting to its viewer and sparks from within a feeling of instant euphoria.
Throughout his artistic career, Coventry constantly revisited the themes of animal and human interaction ranging from dog walkers, bird handlers, cattle farmers to joyriders. Each a humble homage and reminder to the importance of animal and human interaction.
