Jon Buck
Behind the Lines 17 Nov - 24 Dec 2009 Jon Buck’s lively human, bird and animal sculptures look back to a time when animal monuments were worshipped, and explore the human need for cultural icons. Eschewing fashion from the start of his career, Jon Buck has pursued his own interests in primitivism and the links between the physical processes of ‘making’ and the emotional and psychological content of his compositions. Through the reduction of detail to simple line and volume, Buck gives his ideas a direct expression and his bold and joyful use of colour enhances our primary response to each piece. Read more -
Lynn Chadwick
Out of the Shadows 16 Sep - 8 Nov 2009 The constructivist and abstract works Lynn Chadwick produced between 1963 and 1966 have largely escaped critical notice or exposition but are an essential element in any analysis of Chadwick’s unique approach to making sculpture. These sculptures demonstrate that far from sticking to one form of expression during the cultural upheaval of pop, op, and minimalist art, Chadwick was as in touch with the zeitgeist as many of his younger contemporaries. Out of the Shadows: Unseen Sculptures of the 1960s is the most complete survey of Chadwick’s abstract works ever realised and finally recognised how inventive and experimental Chadwick really was. Shared between our two venues Pangolin London and Gallery Pangolin, we offered an insight into these pivotal pieces through drawings, prints and sculptures. The fully illustrated catalogue which accompanies the exhibition gives these abstract works the prominence they deserve within his output as a whole. Read more -
Terence Coventry
Sculpture, prints & drawings 12 May - 12 Jul 2009 Rooted in a strong figurative tradition, Terence Coventry's sculpture explores familiar themes such as birds, bulls, cows and boars. The human figure is another preoccupation to which he frequently returns and in this exhibition of new work we saw a series of joyous, energetic figures full of humour and vitalism. The stimulus of the land and its occupants is central to his sculpture: their ruggedness and gentleness; their movement and behaviour. Coventry expresses his fundamental relationship with his environment and produces images of great power and tenderness. Read more -
Ralph Brown at Eighty
The Early Decades Revisited 18 Mar - 3 May 2009 A major show of the early work of celebrated sculptor Ralph Brown. Born in Leeds in 1928, Brown was the younger contemporary of the eminent group of Yorkshire sculptors that include Kenneth Armitage, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Like Moore, who befriended him and encouraged him by buying his work, Brown's art is deeply rooted in the figurative tradition. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, when abstraction prevailed in British sculpture, Brown remained faithful to the human figure and he has long stood out among his contemporaries as a master of human anatomy.
