William Tucker RA
Unearthing the Figure 15 Oct - 29 Nov 2014 This exhibition takes as its focus Tucker's figurative work, which pushes the figurative to the brink of abstraction. Spanning the last four decades these organic, primordial forms betray the artist's hand bringing an almost sensual tactile quality. The exhibition includes examples of Tucker's early figurative works as well as new casts; Tucker's aim for these sculptures is for them to be sensed internally, through the body, rather than interpreted by the eyes and mind. Peter Randall-Page
Upside Down & Inside Out 5 Sep - 4 Oct 2014 Once again Peter Randall-Page presents an exciting new body of work, which pushes traditional boundaries of making in Upside Down & Inside Out. The gallery housed three new monumental bronzes. In the creation of these, Randall-Page carved directly into the sand moulds taken from naturally eroded granite boulders, working from the inside out. In Randall-Page’s unique process, the carved indentations in the interior of the moulds become convex bulges. The uniform man-made tool used to create the indentations contrasts with the natural form of the original boulders, which is reminiscent of his earlier Theme and Variation series. Peter Randall-Page explains that he hopes his new works “are ambiguous and allude, by their form, to both erosion and growth.” Read more -
Steve Hurst
War Toys 9 Jul - 23 Aug 2014 Coinciding with the centenary of the First World War, Pangolin London hosts an exhibition of works by sculptor and war historian Steve Hurst. Whether cast, fabricated, drawn or written, Hurst’s work often actively questions common opinion and official war history and contrasts it with his own personal experience. The enigmatic sculptures, collages and assemblages that result from these combined interests are instantly recognisable in form, yet imbued with a poignant sense of the tragedy, futility and injustice of war. Terence Coventry
Birds and Beasts 28 May - 28 Jun 2014 Terence Coventry's inimitable style is informed by his impulse to sculpt what he knows. Having farmed for many years on the Cornish coast, his intimate understanding of the animal form translates to his sculptures and eloquently capture their ruggedness and gentleness, their movement and behaviour. This exhibition at Pangolin London looks at the recurring variety of bird and animal forms created throughout Coventry's prolific career. Read more -
Sculpture in the Home
8 Apr - 17 May 2014 Sculpture in the Home celebrates the innovative series of touring exhibitions of the same name curated by the Arts Council of England in the 1940s and '50s. Revisiting the original concept and aims of these pioneering shows, the gallery space at Pangolin London is transformed into a series of domestic settings, incorporating post-war era furnishings and sculpture in this celebration of British art and design.
Highlighting the continued significance of sculpture in everyday life, this contemporary revision of the show features work by a host of prominent post-war sculptors. Works by many of those artists featured in the original Arts Council exhibitions including Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick, Geoffrey Clarke and Bernard Meadows are featured among an intimate setting of exquisite period textiles and furniture.
