David Mach’s Meteorite began its journey as a washed-up piece of driftwood which the artist stumbled across while walking the coastline near a cottage he owns on the East Coast of Scotland. After returning to his London studio with the wood, he carved the piece down to his desired shape and began covering the work with carpet tacks and nails.

The materials themselves are a nod to Mach’s homeland and a reminder of where he grew up – the industrial region of Fife, Scotland. The use of common, mundane materials like the nails and tacks of Meteorite is Mach’s signature flair as he sees these items as ‘the stuff of life’; which are only instantly recognisable but equalisers of mankind. Mach describes the work as looking “like it's landed on the earth after a violent entry into the atmosphere.”
